From the outside, Ethan seemed to be the perfect student. Every morning, he arrived at school before anyone else and left long after sunset. His desk was always covered with notebooks, practice papers and colorful sticky notes. His classmates admired his determination, while his teachers often praised him as an example of hard work.
However, few people knew what was happening inside him. Although Ethan spent almost every waking hour studying, his grades had stopped improving months ago. Every exam ended with the same disappointment. Instead of feeling hopeful, he gradually became exhausted. The excitement he once felt about learning slowly disappeared. Even opening a textbook made him feel tired.
One evening, while packing his schoolbag, Ethan accidentally overheard two classmates talking.
"I don't understand why Ethan studies so much," one of them whispered.
"Maybe he's just afraid of falling behind," the other replied. "But honestly, he doesn't even look happy anymore."
Those words stayed with Ethan all night.
Over the following weeks, things became even worse. He slept less than six hours every night, skipped basketball practice, and stopped talking with his friends during breaks. His parents noticed the change and encouraged him to rest more, but Ethan insisted that studying harder was the only way to succeed.
Then came the monthly examination.
Ethan stared at the score on his paper in disbelief. It was even lower than before.
For the first time in years, he began to question himself.
"Maybe all my efforts are fruitless," he thought.
Unable to hold back his frustration any longer, he quietly walked to the empty school playground after class. Sitting alone on a bench, he watched the sun slowly disappear behind the teaching building.
Just then, his English teacher, Mrs. Carter, happened to pass by.
She sat beside him without saying a word.
After a long silence, Ethan finally whispered,
"I don't know why I keep trying anymore."
Mrs. Carter looked at him kindly and smiled.
