Lesson 37 The Olympic Games

The Olympic Games will be held in our country in four years' time. As a great many people will be visiting the country, the government will be building new hotels, an immense stadium, and a fine new swimming pool. They will also be building new roads and a special railway line. The Games will be held just outside the capital and the whole area will be called 'Olympic City'. Workers will have completed the new roads by the end of this year. By the end of next year, they will have finished work on the new stadium. The fantastic modern buildings have been designed by Kurt Gunter. Everybody will be watching anxiously as the new buildings go up. We are all very excited and are looking forward to the Olympic Games because they have never been held before in this country.

语音标注: Olympic Games 中 Olympic 重音在第二音节;will be held 连读;in four years' time 注意 years' 的发音;immense stadium 注意 /ɪˈmens/ 和 /ˈsteɪdiəm/;anxiously /ˈæŋkʃəsli/;go up 连读。

(List cohesive devices):
逻辑连接词: “As” (表原因), “also” (表递进), “and” (表并列), “because” (表原因)。
代词指代: “They” (指代 the government), “they” (指代 workers), “they” (指代 the Olympic Games)。
词汇复现: 反复出现“Olympic Games”, “build/building”, “new”, “will”等核心词汇,贯穿主题。

Our School Sports Day
Our annual School Sports Day will be held next month on the new playground. As all students and many parents will be attending, the school is making thorough preparations. The sports committee will be organizing various track and field events, such as the 100-meter dash, long jump, and relay races. They will also be arranging a special area for parent-staff friendly matches. By the end of this week, the schedule will have been finalized and announced. All the equipment has been checked by our PE teachers. Everyone is getting very excited and is looking forward to the Sports Day because it promises a day full of fun, teamwork, and healthy competition.
第三、四句用“will be organizing”和“will also be arranging”列举具体措施。第五句用“By the end of...”
The much-anticipated International Music Festival will take place in our city this summer. Since music lovers from around the world will be coming, the city council is busy with arrangements. They will be setting up a huge open-air stage in the central park and inviting famous bands from several countries. Security and cleaning services will also be strengthened. By next month, the full lineup will have been revealed on the official website. The festival has been promoted widely on social media. Local residents are thrilled and are counting down the days because such a large-scale international music event has never been hosted here before.
* “will take place” 对应 “will be held” (宣布事件)。
* “will be coming”, “will be setting up”, “will also be strengthened” 对应将来进行时/一般将来时 (描述未来动作和安排)。
* “will have been revealed” 对应将来完成时被动语态 (未来时间点前完成的动作)。
* “are thrilled”, “are counting down”, “has never been hosted” 对应表达期待和原因。

(The Simple Future Tense: will + verb)
本课中,“will be held”, “will be called” 是其被动语态形式。
基本用法:表预测 (It will rain tomorrow.);表意愿 (I will help you.);表客观将来 (The meeting will start at 9.)
The Olympic Games will be held in our country...;...the whole area will be called 'Olympic City'.
与“be going to”对比: “will”更多表示即时决定、预测或客观事实;“be going to”更多表示事先计划、有迹象。

(The Future Continuous Tense: will be + present participle)
Everybodywill be watchinganxiously as the new buildings go up. / ...a great many peoplewill be visitingthe country... / ...the governmentwill be buildingnew hotels...
Professor Smithwill be givinga lecture on climate change next week.
1. Don't call me between 8 and 10 tonight; I ______ (have) my online class. (will be having) 2. I'm sure you ______ (enjoy) the film. (will enjoy) 3. At this moment next Monday, she ______ (interview) for her dream job. (will be interviewing)

(The Future Perfect Tense: will have + past participle)
Workerswill have completedthe new roadsby the end of this year. / ...theywill have finishedwork on the new stadiumby the end of next year.
By the time you read this letter, Iwill have leftthe city. / How many wordswill you have learnedby the end of this semester?
1. By next summer, they ______ (construct) the bridge for two years. (will have been constructing) 2. I hope the rain ______ (stop) before we go out. (will have stopped) 3. By the age of thirty, she ______ (publish) three novels. (will have published)

(The Present Perfect Passive: have/has been + past participle)
-结构: have/has + been + 过去分词
The fantastic modern buildingshave been designedby Kurt Gunter.
Kurt Gunterdesignedthe buildings. The buildingswere designedby Kurt Gunter. The buildingshave been designedby Kurt Gunter.
All the ticketshave been sold out. / The new policyhas been implementedacross the country.
1. The report ______ (submit) to the manager already. (has been submitted) 2. This ancient temple ______ (restore) several times. (has been restored) 3. My phone ______ (repair). I can use it now. (has been repaired)

在when, before, after, as soon as, until, as, while等引导的时间状语从句中,以及if, unless引导的条件状语从句中,常用一般现在时表示将来。
Everybody will be watching anxiously as the new buildings go up.
I will call you when I arrive in Shanghai. / She won't leave until the work is finished.
1. We will start as soon as the CEO ______ (arrive). (arrives) 2. I won't believe it unless I ______ (see) it. (see) 3. Turn off lights before you ______ (leave). (leave)

Level 2 (Inferential): 5. Scale inferred from “immense” and “special railway line”. 6. “Will be building” emphasizes ongoing process. 7. Challenges: deadlines, coordination, expectations. 8. “Watching anxiously” adds human emotion.
Level 3 (Evaluative): 9. Benefits and drawbacks of hosting. 10. Importance of “first-time” factor. 11. Citizen concerns (cost, disruption). 12. Tone change from worker/resident perspective.

(Current News Extension)
Title: Beyond the Medals: The Legacy of Hosting the Olympics
Hosting the Olympic Games is about more than just 16 days of competition. Cities bid for the honor years in advance, promising lasting benefits or “legacy.” For example, London 2012 aimed to regenerate a deprived area of East London. The Olympic Park was transformed into Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, with new housing, parks, and sports facilities for the community. However, the legacy is not always positive. Some cities, like Athens 2004, struggled with maintaining expensive venues after the Games. The key question for any host is: how can the temporary global spotlight be turned into permanent improvement for its citizens? The planning must focus on sustainable use long after the closing ceremony.
What are the two sides of the Olympic “legacy” mentioned in the text? Can you think of another example?

(Cultural Background Analysis)
Title: The Symbolism of the Olympic Rings
The five interlocking rings on the Olympic flag are one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. Designed by Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games, in 1913, the rings represent the union of the five inhabited continents: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. The colors—blue, yellow, black, green, and red—were chosen because at least one of these colors appears on the flag of every nation in the world. The interlocking design symbolizes the meeting of athletes from all over the globe in friendly competition and the universal Olympic spirit. It's a powerful visual reminder that the Games belong to all of humanity.

(Past-Present Comparison)
Title: The Changing Face of the Olympic Stadium
The first modern Olympics in 1896 used the ancient Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, made of marble. Contrast that with the “Bird's Nest” (Beijing 2008), a stunning steel structure, or London's flexible stadium designed to be downsized after the Games. Early stadiums were simple tracks. Today, they are technological marvels with retractable roofs, giant screens, and sustainable features like rainwater collection. This evolution reflects broader changes: from amateur athletics to a global media spectacle, and from pure sports to an emphasis on architectural statement and environmental responsibility. The stadium itself has become a central character in the Olympic story.
How does the evolution of Olympic stadiums reflect changes in technology and societal values?

(Trendy English Rewrite)
Title: OMG, We're Hosting the Olympics! #CountdownBegins
Okay, so major news just dropped! The Olympics are coming HERE in, like, four years! Cue the massive construction vibes. The gov's gonna be super busy putting up epic new hotels, a crazy-huge stadium (think “immense”!), and a slick swimming pool. They're also on it with new roads and even a special train line. The whole zone near the capital? Yeah, they're calling it “Olympic City” -- cool, right? The roads should be done by this year-end, and the stadium by next. The designs are by this awesome architect, Kurt Gunter. Low-key, everyone's gonna be glued watching it all come together. We're all totally pumped and counting down the days -- it's a first for us! #OlympicDream #BuildingTheFuture
语言点映射: 将正式的“will be held”改为“are coming”, “will be building”改为“gonna be putting up”, “excited”改为“pumped”。

(Slightly Higher Difficulty Extension)
Title: The Economics of Mega-Events: A Double-Edged Sword
The decision to host a mega-event like the Olympics is fundamentally an economic gamble. Proponents argue for the “injection effect”: massive short-term spending on infrastructure creates jobs and stimulates growth. The global exposure is seen as invaluable for tourism and foreign investment long after the event. However, critics point to consistent cost overruns. The initial bid budget is often vastly exceeded due to inflated construction costs and security expenses. Furthermore, the specialized nature of many Olympic venues can lead to poor post-Games utilization, becoming financial drains—so-called “white elephants.” The economic benefit hinges on meticulous long-term planning that integrates Olympic projects into the city's broader development strategy, rather than treating them as one-off spectacles.
What are the main economic arguments for and against hosting the Olympics? What does “white elephant” mean in this context?

书籍: 《The Olympics: A Very Short Introduction》 (David Goldblatt)
BBC《The Olympics: Stories of Glory and Heartbreak》
Olympics.com

3. “The Olympic Games will be held just outside the capital and the whole area will be called 'Olympic City'.”
