Why, you may wonder, should spiders be our friends? Because they destroy so many insects, and insects include some of the greatest enemies of the human race. Insects would make it impossible for us to live in the world; they would devour all our crops and kill our flocks and herds, if it were not for the protection we get from insect-eating animals. We owe a lot to the birds and beasts who eat insects but all of them put together kill only a fraction of the number destroyed by spiders. Moreover, unlike some of the other insect eaters, spiders never do the least harm to us or our belongings.

5. 并列句与并列连词

并列连词and:连接语法地位平等的词、短语或句子。本课多处使用,如S2, S4, S9。

并列连词but:表示转折。如S4, S10。

并列连词for:表示原因,是较正式的原因连词,不能用于句首,引导的从句是对前文的解释说明。S7: ... at a glance, for a spider always has eight legs...

"not ... nor ..."结构:S6: Spiders are not insects, ... nor even nearly related to them. 表示"既不......也不......"。nor后的分句常用倒装或省略。

6. 宾语从句 (Object Clauses) 与主语从句

由that引导的宾语从句:S9: ... he estimated that there were more than 2,250,000 in one acre. (that在句中可省略)

由疑问词how many引导的宾语从句:S10: ... to make ... guess at how many they kill. (how many引导的从句作介词at的宾语)

由that引导的主语从句(作真正主语):S10: ... that the weight ... would be greater than ... (作is estimated的主语,用it作形式主语)。

7. 比较结构 (Comparative Structure)

S10: ... would be greater than the total weight of all the human beings in the country. 这是形容词比较级"greater"的基本用法,后面用than引出比较对象。

8. 省略 (Ellipsis)

S7: ... and an insect never more than six. 此处省略了与前半句相同的谓语动词has和宾语legs,完整形式为:and an insect never has more than six legs.

省略使语言简洁,避免不必要的重复,是英语中常见的修辞手段。

9. 插入语 (Parenthesis)

S1: Why, you may wonder, should spiders be our friends? "you may wonder"作为插入语,用逗号隔开,增加了与读者的互动性。
